Encountering Under Cover by John Bevere felt perfectly timed, as it addressed lingering questions about authority and obedience that had been weighing on my heart. Recently, the political upheavals—Trump’s re-election in the U.S. and South Korean president’s declaration of martial law—had me questioning why corrupt individuals often ascend to positions of power. Why don’t God-fearing, righteous people lead nations? Bevere’s insights into obedience and submission to authorities revealed profound truths that transformed my understanding of these issues, offering three key revelations that answered my concerns.
The first revelation—that all authority is appointed by God—initially left me unsettled. While I acknowledged God’s sovereignty, I couldn’t reconcile this idea with the existence of cruel and corrupt leaders who have inflicted immense suffering, such as Hitler. To my surprise, Bevere directly addressed this example. He explained that even through flawed or evil rulers, God fulfills His purposes, even if those purposes are beyond our comprehension. This challenged my perspective on current leaders. Despite my personal disapproval of Trump, especially for his polarizing rhetoric and controversies, I began to consider that his leadership might serve a divine purpose. Similarly, while South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol faces criticism and impeachment attempts, his authority must also stem from God’s appointment. Realizing this allowed me to confront the pride in my own judgment, as questioning their legitimacy was questioning God’s decisions.
The second revelation focused on respecting and submitting to authority, which Bevere distinguishes from mere obedience. Obedience is external—following instructions—while submission involves the heart, reflecting genuine respect and humility. I realized I often obeyed authority outwardly but harbored judgment internally as I have the tendency to hold leaders to high standards. Bevere emphasized that judging authority stems from pride and a lack of trust in God’s sovereignty. This revelation hit home, leading me to repent for my arrogance and the ways I had resisted submission, even subtly. True submission requires letting go of my tendency to hold leaders to high standards and instead honoring their God-given roles, despite their imperfections.
The third and perhaps most transformative revelation was that submission to authority is ultimately an act of submission to God. Bevere highlights that God places us under authority to maintain order, uphold laws, and foster unity. Disrespecting or undermining authority not only disrupts this order but also hinders God’s plans for redemption and restoration in the world. This insight deepened my understanding of how my faith is tied to my willingness to submit. By obeying and honoring those in authority, I align myself with God’s will and demonstrate trust in His ultimate plan.
Reflecting on these revelations, I now see the importance of approaching authority with humility and faith. My goal is delight in submission, not just out of duty but as an expression of trust in God. I aspire to be part of a united body of Christ under His leadership, working toward His will on earth. John Bevere’s Under Cover has reshaped my perspective on authority, obedience and submission, and faith, providing guidance during these confusing, challenging times.
