"Disciple: A Handbook for New Believers" by Juan Carlos Ortiz points out many problems modern churches faces. I had to ponder for some time on how I should write a review. In the end, I ended up praying for wisdom to be spiritually gentle and provide a positive feedback without introducing misunderstandings.
While other books allowed me to reflect on my sins and failures, this book forced me to introspect on my church's method on making disciples. While ther are similaries, from what Reverend Ortiz wrote on the formation of disciples, church services, cell group operations, and others, his recommendations and conclusions on how a church should operate and how Saenuri operates in many ways seem quite different. I won't go into details of these differences, but they are something to meditate on. I am not saying that what Reverend Ortiz is recommending is correct, but just making an observation that two methods differ.
In many ways, the book makes assumptions that believers understand the fundamental teachings of the bible on being truly obedient and faithful Christians is all about, but isn't that the problem in the first place? If we truly understand and hidden these teachings in our hearts to be truths, then most likely we wouldn't be so complacent about being disciples much less making disciples of Jesus Christ. The current general Christianity trend where feelings are emphasized over truths is not very easy to reverse. He seems to make a huge leap of faith that we all hold these truths deeply in our hearts, but shortcomings come from the lack of proper methods.
This book was supposed to be an easy reading, but ended up being a book that I may reread few months later to see if I will receive different perspectives.
