Disciple by Juan Carlos Ortiz is a straight forward, no non-sense, tell it like it is book which make you wonder about the walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. This book made me think about my walk as disciple. I thought I was doing fine in my point of view of discipleship but when I took a deep dive to reflect all the aspect of my walk with Jesus made me realize that I was far from it.

My conviction tells me that I am saved but who is the Lord of my life, off course, it’s Jesus Christ. I would answer it just like that. But really!

The book states 제자란 무엇인가? 제자는 예수 그리스도를 따르는 사람이다, but not all follower will not become DISCIPLE OF CHRIST. Wow, what a statement! That was a shock to me and that particular statement linger in my mind for long time.

To become disciple of Christ to me is that I need to get off the bus called “all about me” and focus on what God wants from me. Which requires me to change my perspective on God. I knew it in my head and believed I was living it but actuality I did not live the life. All my prayers were all about me. What I needed and wanted. God is not a genie in the bottle where I can get what I wanted when I asked. I never asked what he wanted or needed.

From the gospel of Me to the Lordship of my life has to change to become the bond servant of Christ. This requires effort, dedication, and sacrifice because Lord Jesus tell me that in Matthew 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. This requires obedience since the lordship of my life has been changed. I no longer live but Christ lives in me.  

Plus, to be a disciple of Christ mean that we have to love one another John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Without love the individuals cannot be called the disciple of Christ. It is a command which he gives everyone.

We cannot pick and choose who we want to love since we are the body of we must love every member of the body. Because LOVE = SALVATION. Love is the evidence that we have salvation. 1 John 4:7–8 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.   

This book is a refreshing reminder to me that as Christian we are chosen and destine to do the will of God once we become the true Disciples of Christ which starts from shifting from self-center perspective to life proclaiming bond servant of Christ.
