Disciple by a Pentecostal Pastor from Argentina, Juan Carlos Ortiz, is a simple, but a sharp reminder as to what it really means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. The book is divided into two sections, “The New Wine” and “The New Wineskins.”
The first section, “The New Wine,” reminds us how our view of salvation should shape our walk with Christ. Ortiz starts off with “A disciple is one who follows Jesus Christ. But because we are Christians does not necessarily mean we are His disciples, even though we are members of His Kingdom. Following Christ means acknowledging Him as Lord.” As I realize now that as “slaves of Christ,” we are to live only for him. Servants don’t exercise rights, but they continue to serve until told otherwise! It also means loving and praising. Once we are in the Kingdom of God, we are under the King’s authority. We move by His command and we will be eternally worshiping Him.
In the second section, “The New Wineskins,” Ortiz points out the issue of immaturity in the church. He reminds us that we need to move from being dependent children to mature spiritual adults. Ortiz expands on the command to repent and the command to love. In the last few chapters, he shows how the restructuring of the church, to a cell church model, is meant to grow the maturity of believers and reach the fulfillment of Christ’s mission to the world.
I have always felt that if I have to summarize in one word Jesus’ Love for me, then it was “Grace.” Dictionary defines “grace” as:
- (in Christian belief) the free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings.
- Simple elegance or refinement of movement
There is a third, and less used meaning, do honor or credit to (someone or something) by one’s presence. Lords were referred as "Your Grace." Ortiz reminded me that in addition to the free and unmerited favor of God, that Jesus Christ is my Lord, my "Grace."
A disciple is one who learns to live the life his teacher lives. Discipleship is not simply communication of knowledge or information; it is a communication of life. And this book helped me to better understand it.
