I chose to read the “Purpose Driven Life” as my first reading assignment in the hopes that it would be a simple and uncomplicated book that I could finish in a timely manner, and check it off from my Bible Study to-do-list. And after reading it, the book certainly lived up to my expectation of simplicity. It was easy to read, as pointed out by some commentaries that I read about this popular book before hand; most popular books tend to be so which add to their mass appeal. In addition the book is divided into to 40 small sections that are simple to follow and clear to understand. What I did not expect as I was reading the book, however, was a realization that I might not be checking off all of my to-do list that really matters before God.

When reading the “Purpose Driven Life”, the only thing that I had to do was to “observe”. Often time when I read the Bible, there are parables, symbolisms and historical context that require additional research or analysis to fully comprehend the message. However with this book, the simplicity and clarity of the message in each section was self “explaining”. Rather than trying to explain the whole complexity of the Bible, it identifies 40 actionable messages from the Bible that we could “apply” in our lives. Then as I was reading, perhaps as a validation of the messages being conveyed with each section, the messages resonated more and more in me with a sense of affirmation, guilt, and awakening: affirmation for the things that I was doing right, guilt for the things that I was not doing, and awakening for the things that I did not know.
By the end of the book, I realized what Rick Warren meant by “Purpose Drive Life”: I am here for a purpose, I need to fulfill that purpose, and I can only fulfill that purpose when I am alive.
