We hear these phrases frequently "believe in yourself", "trust yourself", or "follow your heart".  As followers of Christ, is this something that Christians should practice or even say?

Since the bible is true revealing, these statements are actually contractictory to biblical teaching.  Submitting Christians should be saying "don't believe in yourself", "don't trust yourself", or "don't follow your heart".  These may sound depressing, but it is true. After the sin entered the world, man is total depraved.  That's why Jesus Christ had to come.  If we were only partially depraved, then Jesus is nothing more than a motivational teacher.  

Even after receiving Christ, we still have to submit to the Holy Spirit and the Bible to do the will of God.  I know this is true because Jesus said I cannot do anything without him (John 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.).  If you ever hearsomeone preach "trust in your judgement" before confirming biblically, you should be very careful... he may be a confused person or a ravenous wolf in sheep's clothing.

Here is what God says about the fallen man's mind.

Jeremiah 17:9  
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 28:26 
Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool,

    but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered

Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man,
    but its end is the way to death.

Proverbs 12:15 
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
    but a wise man listens to advice.

Instead, we should trust in the Holy Spirit confirmed through the scripture.  

Jeremiah 17:7
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
    whose trust is the Lord.
